  • I love junk mail.

    Wednesday, Jan 3
    7:55am

    Get any weird mail lately?

Postcards for Senior Living, Gold Bullion investments pitches, or maybe a Medicaid sales packet?

I’ve found, the longer I’m in marketing, the more odd things arrive in the mail.

“Junk mail,” I used to call it.

    Now?

    Saint Paul

    Hey.

Today I wanted to highlight the idea of “frame control.”

A “frame” is the conversation you’re in, and the information present in that frame.

Frame control is used in both personal relationships and in marketing.

  • That was one weird trick (the “Online Ads that Work” post)

    10:29pm
    Saint Paul

Hey I just logged onto my computer to work on bullets for my recent podcast recording with copywriter John Brandt.

And in my inbox sat an email… from myself… with the subject line, “Online Ads that Work.”

  • I broke my son’s nose. (He was asking for it!)

    10:49am
    Saint Paul

“Throw it high so I have to jump!” were his last words.

I threw my 8 year old son the baseball, over his head, like he wanted.

He stretched out his glove… jumped for the ball…

And the ball bounced off his glove… and into his face.

  • You can do it, too.

    2:40pm
    Saint Paul, Minnesota

A few weeks ago my son got a crazy idea:

Let’s fix the garage door opener!

It hasn’t worked in years. But he found a video online with 15 fixes for your garage door opener, and he made me watch it.

And I agreed, yeah maybe one of those things could be a problem…

  • Too hot to move? Listen to podcasts.

    12:08pm
    Saint Paul

Forecast says it’s going to be 113° this weekend.

We had discussed going to the Minnesota State Fair. Too hot for that crowd.

Or maybe we’d visit family on a lake in the woods. Too far to drive.

So right now, we’re looking at an empty, long weekend before the school year starts.

Meanwhile, I’m getting the podcast clips from Dennis Demori, John Bejakovic, Matt Rizvi and others pulled together to help YOU find copywriting clients.

  • Where to find copy clients?

    2:09pm
    Saint Paul

    Howdy *|FNAME|*,

I’ve been thinking about my podcast and the copywriting guests I’ve hosted.

Ben Settle. Drayton Bird. Dennis Demori. Matt Rizvi. Jim Claire. John Bejakovic.

If you’ve been on the list for a few years, you may have heard these interviews.

Now, one question I often ask on the podcast is,

    “Where do YOU find clients?”

Because there seems to be a lot of competition to find clients willing to hire self-employed copywriters.

    “There’s nothing here!”

I was invited to follow a Gold Jewelry company on LinkedIn.

So I went to the website to see what they offered.

    But it was pretty empty.

So—like marketers do—I signed up for their email list to see their welcome sequence.

That was two hours ago. I haven’t received a welcome email from them yet.

But—unknown to them—I did get a great gift.

    Ahh.

I’m recharged after a family trip to Montreal.

We visited friends, saw the city, climbed a ropes course (Voiles en Voiles), and ate our share of gravy-soaked Poutine.

    If not? No worry.
