Should I take that gig?
The decision had been weighing on my mind for a week.
So over this past weekend, I put some energy into making homemade bread, occupying my body while I let my brain work.
Baking bread was a welcome return after a cold winter with a broken wrist.
I rolled out the dough and formed it and left it to rise again while I started the naan and let my thoughts churn.
Just a few hours every week, I thought. Good pay. In the financial world, one of the Holy Grail markets for a copywriter!
Tempting.
But.
Would I be happier? Or just more busy and more well off?
I would be selling high-interest loans, to people who certainly can’t afford them.
And would the people who act on my ads want to sit and break bread with me, two months later when their payments can’t be made?
I thought of the line from Jurassic Park:
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could… they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
Good copy should sell.
But that doesn’t mean I should.
So… I passed on the opportunity.
There will be others, from people or brands that believe their offer benefits customers.
(Maybe that’s you? If so, hit reply, let’s chat.)
And if you’ve faced a similar situation… good money for something you find unsavory… what choice did you make?
No judgement here. But we’ve all faced something like that, and I’m curious how you reacted.
