  • YouTube’s unskippable 60 min ads

    12:19pm
    Saint Paul

    I write ads.

Some of my copywriting peers love seeing ads “in the wild” because it helps them know what others are doing.

But I’ve blocked ads for a long time, even before I became a copywriter, because they’re often just so bad.

    Now, YouTube’s been fighting ad-blockers for a while…

And apparently, YouTube is winning that fight.

So they’ve made some ads unskippable, even when the ad is an hour long!

These are VSLs–video sales letters–and the advertiser has to pay for them after X amount of viewing time.

    Make them unskippable, and suddenly…

  • What’s the benefit here?

    2:28pm
    Saint Paul

I assembled a web ad today, from the client’s provided copy.

It starts out, “Want to do more in 2025?”

    Not exactly, I whispered.

What’s the benefit? The big idea? The hook?

  • Small change to your pop-up = Big impact.

Most people hate marketing… unless it’s something they’re interested in.

    Then—when it’s done right—it’s not marketing.

    It’s useful.

And without a doubt, one of the most annoying methods of digital marketing is the Pop-Up.

You know what I mean. You’re on a web page, engaging with the content, when suddenly there’s something blocking your view.

    Infuriating, right?

    Well, marketers hate them too.

    Except that… they work.

  • My Cheap Brother Brought Me a Hot Chicken Dinner.

    2:49pm Friday
    Saint Paul

I’ve been swamped the last two weeks, in a good way.

I started writing Facebook ads with a new client and it’s been a lot of fun.

One hook I wrote has me laughing maniacally and I’m not sure why. But it’s definitely not a hook that’s used in this market… or maybe anywhere:

  • Copywriter, read more of THIS.

    10:20am Wednesday
    Saint Paul

    Experts are everywhere.

A former boss once told me, “once you know more than the other guy, you’re the expert.”

Which is why you see gurus all over the place, having moved from Level 0 to Level 1, touting their expertise.

Nothing wrong with self-promotion, of course.

But there is always more to learn!…

  • Online Ads that Work

    11:54am Friday

Ever put out an ad on Google or Facebook or whatever…

    And it just didn’t “work?”

Low clicks… and even fewer sales?

Here are three reasons why your ads may fail… and how to fix ’em.

    1. If your ad is targeting the wrong audience, you won’t get clicks. Fix that by either targeting better… or—contrary to a lot of advice—don’t target at all!

    Why not target, you ask?
