You watching the Olympics?
They’re a big deal in our house:
We have a TV that ONLY comes out every 2 years so we can watch the Olympics in the living room. And then, a few weeks later, we put it away.
Scientists used to think dopamine was released after we accomplish something. It was seen as the “reward chemical.”
But that’s not correct.
Dopamine is an “anticipation chemical” –– we get the feel-good feelings just by thinking about accomplishing something.
Not thinking about the effort, but the being done.
That’s why one way to overcome procrastination is to think about being done… and how good that feels…
Planning, it turns out, is close enough to “being done” that if we spend a lot of time planning, we feel like we’re accomplishing something.
So we’re satisfied.
And then we plan a bit more.
Maybe learn a few new things, maybe not.
And nothing ever happens.
But success comes from doing something, not just planning it.
Lots of people are afraid of AI taking their jobs.
But AI doesn’t have emotions.
It doesn’t have your experiences.
It can’t take action like you can.
The info was already out in the world.
It takes humans to give it meaning and put that info into action.
AI knows “how” to do something.
You also know “how” to do things.
But only one of you is capable of moving beyond the planning phase and actually doing something.
So maybe it’s not AI that’s the threat.
Maybe it’s our desire to plan, plan, plan and be perfect before we take any action.
But when will we ever be truly ready?
