“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson
The world is trying to change you. You, reader of PRL, may be trying to change the world.
Good luck.
I don’t mean this in a dismissive or negative way. I sincerely wish you luck in motivating the world around you. Think big and act fast. Create. Add value.
Change the world and change your circumstances. Just don’t expect other people to change much.
The world and its people have a direction of their own. Understand and embrace this. Life shouldn’t be a struggle, Us against Them.
It is all Us.
Everything is connected.
You’ll get far further swimming with the current of the Tao than swimming against the Tao.
I’m not suggesting that you cave to public opinion or that you change yourself to please people.
Quite the contrary. I’m suggesting that you work with people, finding common ground.
I’m suggesting that your actions demonstrate your value. Demonstrate that your outlook is above the madness of the crowd, that your behavior is not easily swayed by emotional waves.
“Avoid whatever is approved by the mob” —Letters from a Stoic by Seneca
How does one “go with the flow” while simultaneously rising above it? How to stand strong when the madness of the mob is all around?
“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you…” —If… by Rudyard Kipling
You must build your inner fortress, so it can protect you and your family in times of trial.
Build your confidence. Build your people skills. Build upon your talents.
Build your understanding of the way the world works, not the way you wish the world would work. Not how others wish the world would work.
Act to improve yourself and your own corner of the universe.
Strengthen your fortress during the good times. Rely on your understanding during the turbulent times.
Build Your Inner Fortress. Protect your kingdom.
There are dragons all around.
