“Ah yes! My Dale Carnegie feedback!” I said, picking up the notecards from the floor.
As I read them, each made me smile.
Maybe you know this, but years ago, I took the Dale Carnegie communications course.
Carnegie wrote the book, How to Win Friends and Influence People.
And the Carnegie course helped my relationships, my confidence, and my public speaking (like my recent gig at B2B Forum in Boston).
But none of that had the impact that these cards have.
Let me explain.
See, one day during the Carnegie course, we were given a story to repeat and make it our own.
The story was about a high diver who had to climb a ladder, jump off the board, and land in a glass of water 10 stories below.
I don’t recall what exactly I did…
But I was unusually animated with my body language.
And even though a dozen people told the same story before me… and after me…
The class voted for me as best improved storyteller.
I won a copy of Carnegie’s book, The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking.
I’ve only opened it once.
Because while I could surely use some ongoing assistance to my public speaking…
What today’s story is really about…
Is the feeling of connections I re-live when I read these sincere notecards from my classmates.

Give More Complements.
It sounds easy.
But rarely are the complements we throw about very sincere.
Because when we are sincere, we open ourselves up to criticism–and that can be scary.
But that’s what builds trusting relationships.
Know what else builds relationships–business relationships?
Making money with well-written sales copy.
Which is what I’m doing, just as soon as I send this note your way.
